US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to pardon Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar, who was charged last year with accepting around $600,000 (£478,000) in bribes. In a statement on social media, Trump said he would issue a 'full and unconditional' pardon for both Cuellar and his wife, Imelda Cuellar, who was also implicated in the case.

Trump remarked, 'Henry, I don't know you, but you can sleep well tonight - Your nightmare is finally over!' He suggested that Cuellar's charges, which stem from accusations involving foreign influences, were politically motivated, asserting that they resulted from Cuellar's outspoken views on immigration and border security.

Cuellar and his wife maintain their innocence regarding the charges, which include bribery, conspiracy, and money laundering. The indictment alleges they accepted bribes from an Azerbaijani government-owned oil company and a Mexican bank in exchange for influencing US foreign policy. The couple reportedly used the funds for various personal expenses and debt repayments.

Despite being a Democrat, Cuellar is known for his conservative positions, particularly on issues like abortion and immigration. Recently, he filed for re-election to his seat, putting to rest rumors of a potential party switch to align with Republicans.

This pardon marks Trump's third act of clemency this week, following similar actions involving other individuals convicted of fraud. As the political landscape evolves, Cuellar's future remains uncertain amid ongoing discussions regarding accountability and justice.
