A second ransom note surfaced days after the kidnapping of 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, claiming she had died. The first note demanded millions in bitcoin for her release, while the second apologized for her death and said it was inadvertent. Authorities say the case remains active and that the FBI and Pima County Sheriff's Department are pursuing leads.
Savannah Guthrie, the longtime host of NBC’s Today show and daughter of the missing woman, said on the show that the family is “in agony” and pleaded for anyone with information to come forward. The family and media continue to call for information to locate Guthrie.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment on the notes’ contents but confirmed the investigation is ongoing and that investigators are following up on leads. The FBI has also declined comment. The family has offered a $1 million reward plus an additional $100,000 pledged by the FBI for any information leading to Nancy’s return.
Law enforcement has requested that media hold off publishing details of the notes while they investigate, citing concerns that early disclosure could hamper public assistance in reviewing security footage.
