After weeks of captivity, the Nigerian Defence Forces have rescued the widow of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died of health complications while held by alleged bandits in Katsina state.
General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on 19 May. Their disappearance sparked a nationwide search that intensified after the general’s death on 6 June.
During a sustained offensive, troops surrounded a compound in northern Katsina. Shockingly, shots were fired at Mrs. Abubakar as forces advanced, but she was recovered alive and is now receiving treatment in a military hospital.
"We pray that Allah grants her good health, complete recovery, peace of mind, and strength after everything she has been through," her daughter Bilkisu posted on WhatsApp.
The general’s death was attributed to diabetes and high blood pressure. President Bola Tinubu described it as a “shock” and a reminder of the threat posed by armed criminal groups.
Security analysts note that bandits frequently target rural communities in north‑west Nigeria, while militant jihadists also operate in the area. A recent US airstrike targeted a suspected jihadist camp in Sokoto state, underscoring the complex security landscape.
The military remains committed to full recovery for Mrs. Abubakar and will continue operations to track those responsible for the abduction.
