An Israeli military court has sentenced a reservist to seven months in prison after he confessed to committing aggravated abuse against Palestinian detainees from Gaza. The incidents took place at the Sde Teiman military detention facility in southern Israel, where the soldier was found guilty of punching detainees and using his weapon against them while they were handcuffed and blindfolded.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the soldier's actions occurred in front of other soldiers, some of whom urged him to stop. The incidents were reportedly documented on his mobile phone. He was the first soldier to be convicted of such abuse against Palestinians during the ongoing war with Hamas, based on reports from the Beit Lid Military Court.
This soldier admitted to three counts of aggravated abuse alongside one count of unbecoming conduct as part of a plea deal. The charges encompassed four separate incidents that occurred between January and June 2024 while he was assigned guard duty over lorries carrying detainees.
The court's ruling has drawn attention to an unspecified number of masked soldiers who may have participated in the abusive acts.
In addition to his prison sentence, the soldier has received a suspended sentence and witnessed a demotion to the rank of private. The IDF emphasized that soldiers are expected to uphold their commitments to act in accordance with the organization's values at all times, especially during wartime.
The Sde Teiman facility has been the center of numerous allegations of serious abuses since its establishment following renewed conflict in Gaza 15 months ago. Reports from the UN and various human rights organizations have brought to light systematic abuse, with accusations ranging from physical violence to sexual assaults against detainees.
Despite these allegations, Israeli authorities have denied claims of widespread mistreatment, asserting that they adhere to international legal standards and have investigated every complaint received.
This conflict escalated sharply after a significant cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to substantial military actions by Israel against Hamas. The aftermath saw more than 47,550 fatalities in Gaza, according to reports from Hamas-run health authorities. The rights group HaMoked indicates that approximately 1,802 Palestinians are currently classified as "unlawful combatants" held in Israeli prisons, not accounting for any detainees under military custody.
