Itamar Ben-Gvir, the far-right Israeli National Security Minister, has sparked significant outrage after posting a video in which he mocked pro-Palestinian activists detained following the interception of a Gaza-bound flotilla by Israeli naval forces. Italy and France have formally condemned the treatment of the activists, labeling it unacceptable, and summoned Israel's ambassadors for explanations.
Ben-Gvir's video shows him visiting a detention facility where activists are being held, where he encouraged security personnel as they restrained one activist shouting, Free, Free, Palestine. He further inflamed the situation by declaring, Welcome to Israel. We are the masters while waving an Israeli flag.
In a rare show of criticism from within his own government, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that Ben-Gvir's conduct was not in line with Israel's values, directing authorities to expedite the deportation of the activists.
A rights group representing the 430 activists from over 40 countries involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla has called for their immediate release, emphasizing that the flotilla was intended to draw attention to the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza. In contrast, the Israeli government has dismissively referred to the initiative as a PR stunt at the service of Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry asserted that no live ammunition was used during the interception and insisted that the blockade on Gaza will be upheld.
Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the treatment of the activists as intolerable and demanded an apology. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for respect towards the detained nationals. In response, the Israeli ministry reiterated that the activists would be allowed to meet consular representatives upon arrival in Israel, while a legal challenge against their detention is in the works.
This incident has introduced a new layer of diplomatic tension amid ongoing humanitarian concerns impacting residents of Gaza. Despite claims of an abundant supply of aid entering the territory, reports indicate that many families continue to live in untenable conditions, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
