FAIRFAX, Va. — A Brazilian au pair who has pleaded guilty to manslaughter testified against her former employer and lover on Wednesday in a disturbing double homicide case that prosecutors say was part of an elaborate scheme to rid the world of the man’s wife. Brendan Banfield, an IRS agent, faces aggravated murder charges in the 2023 killings of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in their Virginia home. Banfield has pleaded not guilty and could face life in prison if found guilty.

According to prosecutors, Brendan Banfield and Juliana Peres Magalhães were involved in an illicit love affair. To eliminate Christine Banfield, they impersonated her on a fetish social media platform, crafting an elaborate plan with Ryan, a stranger, that culminated in murder. Magalhães testified that they attempted to stage the scene to appear as though they were defending against an intruder attacking Christine with a knife.

Originally charged with murder, Magalhães cooperated with investigators and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in 2024. She is awaiting sentencing, which could be significantly lighter depending on her cooperation throughout the proceedings against Banfield.

In court, Banfield’s attorney, John Carroll, argued that Magalhães lost faith in her previous legal counsel after maintaining her innocence for over a year. Witnessing the emotional turmoil faced by Magalhães, including letters expressing feelings of depression and despair during her time in jail, Carroll challenged her motivations for shifting her testimony.

While Banfield also faces charges of child abuse and felony child cruelty linked to the case, he remains steadfast in his not guilty plea.

As the trial unfolds, the shocking details around these tragic events continue to captivate public attention and raise questions about the relationship dynamics and implications of deception within personal relationships.
