In a recent interview, Finnish President Alexander Stubb shared his insights on the ongoing peace talks surrounding the conflict in Ukraine. Describing his involvement as “humble,” Stubb explained that he maintains an open dialogue with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump. His warnings come amidst rising tensions, with Trump recently expressing anger at Russia over missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian areas, voicing potential sanctions on Russian oil customers.

Acknowledging the urgency of his mission, Stubb downplayed any direct influence he might have over Trump, instead highlighting the leading roles of notable European figures like France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Stubb’s efforts, he explains, are focused on “nudging things in the right direction” to foster communication among leaders.

Recalling Finland's turbulent history, particularly after World War II when territorial losses and military limitations left the country under significant Russian influence for decades, Stubb is acutely aware of the stakes involved for Ukraine. He emphasizes that Ukraine should not bear a similar fate, stressing the importance of preserving its independence and alliances, as well as ensuring lasting peace in the region.
