The Irish broadcaster, RTÉ, has stated it will not take part in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if the participation of Israel goes ahead.

In a statement, RTÉ stressed that Ireland's participation in the event would be unconscionable given the ongoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza.

Historically, Ireland has won the contest seven times, with its last victory occurring in 1996.

RTÉ plans to make a final decision once the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) decides on Israel's participation.

The 2026 contest is set to be held in May in Vienna, with several other broadcasters, including Slovenia and Spain, signaling their potential withdrawal should Israel participate.

Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, acknowledged the concerns surrounding the conflict in the Middle East and affirmed that the EBU is consulting with its members on how to address participation amidst geopolitical tensions.

Broadcasters have until mid-December to confirm their participation, and there have been calls from various quarters, including a letter signed by over 70 former Eurovision contestants, urging a ban on Israel from the competition.

Frank Dermody, Chair of the Irish Eurovision Fan Club, backed RTÉ's position, suggesting that if more countries follow suit, it could severely impact viewer numbers and result in a diminished competition format for 2026.
