The Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claims it has captured the army headquarters in the besieged city of El-Fasher, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s civil war.

The RSF stated via social media that it destroyed significant military assets and commandeered equipment from the army's 6th Division Headquarters.

Video footage shared on various platforms has been confirmed by BBC Verify, showcasing RSF fighters inside the base.

This loss is a major setback for government forces, as El-Fasher has been their last stronghold in the Darfur region, effectively placing RSF in control of the area. The Sudanese army has yet to comment.

For 18 months, the RSF has encircled El-Fasher, subjecting army positions and civilians to relentless bombardment. Currently, around 300,000 individuals are trapped by the conflict.

Recent satellite images revealed extensive earthen walls constructed around the city, reportedly aimed at confining the populace.

The RSF has been making steady advances towards the 6th Infantry Division command in recent weeks.

Although some parts of El-Fasher remain under government control, they are not anticipated to hold out much longer.

As residents grapple with ongoing violence, reports indicate that hunger and disease are rampant due to constant assaults and dwindling supplies.

UN investigators have accused the RSF of severe human rights violations during the siege, with the U.S. government alleging acts of genocide against Darfur's non-Arab communities.

Sudan has endured relentless conflict since 2023, instigated by a power struggle between key RSF and Sudanese army commanders, leading to over 150,000 deaths and displacing about 12 million people.

The RSF currently controls the majority of Darfur and much of the Kordofan region, with aspirations to establish a rival government upon fully securing El-Fasher.
