A tragic bus accident in South Africa has led to the death of 42 individuals, primarily comprising Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals. The incident occurred on Sunday night as the bus was navigating through a mountainous section of the N1 highway in Limpopo province.
According to local transport officials, the bus veered off the road along a steep mountain pass and plunged down an embankment, resulting in a significant casualty toll. Among the deceased are seven children, with the remainder being 18 women and 17 men. Additionally, 49 passengers have been reported injured.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences, acknowledging the tragedy as not only a loss for South Africa but also for its neighboring countries of Zimbabwe and Malawi. The cause of the crash remains unknown, prompting authorities to initiate an investigation.
Reports indicate that the bus was returning from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. Officials, including Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, plan to visit the crash site to address the situation and support the injured passengers.
