Pétanque Players Clash in Mimizan Tragedy
A 68‑year‑old man who played pétanque fell to death after a disputed hit from a metal boule during a quarrel between a beach team and a town squad in Mimizan, a seaside resort on France’s Atlantic coast.
Witnesses say the fight erupted after the beach group requested a playing spot in town amid a heatwave. The dispute escalated and a metal boule was thrown. The victim was struck on the head, later collapsing with a heart attack, according to local radio reports.

The Mont‑de‑Marsan prosecutor states the evidence points to an 81‑year‑old man as the striker, although investigations are still ongoing to clarify each on‑site participant’s role.
Authorities continue probing how the case unfolded and evaluate whether other participants were involved in the confrontation that turned violent.
Pétanque is a traditional French pastime where hollow steel balls, called boules, are rolled toward a small wooden target ball. It is popular on beaches and town grounds alike across the country.
The incident sparks concerns over safety protocols in public sporting activities, especially where equipment can become dangerous during heated disputes.
