Lebanon's Prime Minister has accused Israel of war crimes following an airstrike that killed one journalist and injured another in southern Lebanon. Amal Khalil, who worked for the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, was reportedly a target, along with freelance photographer Zeinab Faraj, as they sought shelter after an initial blast struck their vehicle, killing two others.
Lebanese officials allege that Israeli forces also targeted a marked ambulance trying to reach the injured journalists. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have denied these claims, asserting they do not target journalists and take measures to minimize harm.
Prime Minister Salam characterized the attacks as attempts to obstruct journalists' work, stating, Targeting journalists, obstructing access to them by relief teams, and even targeting their locations again after these teams arrive constitutes described war crimes. He indicated that Lebanon would bring these offenses to international forums.
This is not an isolated incident; Salam noted a pattern of deliberate targeting of media workers by Israel in southern Lebanon, stating that the nation's sovereignty and the safety of its journalists are paramount.
The IDF claims that it struck two vehicles approaching its lines, which allegedly posed an immediate threat to its troops, but did not address the ongoing accusations regarding the targeting of the journalists specifically. The health ministry in Lebanon reported that Khalil and Faraj had sought refuge from the initial attack, only to be pursued and targeted again.
In the wake of Khalil's death, the Committee to Protect Journalists expressed outrage, arguing that the incident exemplifies a grave violation of international humanitarian law. Reporters Without Borders also highlighted the concerning trend of targeting journalists in conflict zones.
Amal Khalil had previously received threats related to her work and remained dedicated to her reporting duties despite the risks. Her tragic death brings to light the dangers faced by journalists operating in conflict areas. The situation has escalated tensions, underscoring the ongoing cycle of violence and the need for accountability in military operations.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, both the Lebanese and Israeli governments are under scrutiny, as multiple journalists have died or been injured in recent strikes. Investigations into these incidents are essential to address the concerns of targeting media personnel in danger zones, while officials still grapple with the persistent violence erupting in the region.
