US‑Iran talks postponed as Vance cancels Swiss trip

A new round of direct US‑Iran talks, scheduled at the Burgenstock mountaintop resort in Switzerland, has been postponed after Vice‑President Jared Vance cancelled his planned visit at the end of Thursday.
The White House said the logistics of Vance’s trip were “not simple or predictable” and therefore the trip was withdrawn, leaving the diplomatic meeting on hold. The Swiss foreign ministry confirmed the postponement, but noted that preparations for the talks are still underway.
The delay comes on the heels of Washington’s decision to lift the naval blockade against Iran after the two nations signed a deal earlier this week to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear program.
Negotiators were set to carry out “technical discussions” on the next steps of the agreement, a 14‑point framework that includes a $300bn reconstruction plan for Iran, a promise that Iran will never create nuclear weapons and the termination of all sanctions. The deal also establishes a 60‑day window for finalising the implementation of its terms, with the possibility of extensions by mutual consent.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei approved the deal but said it reflected a “different view” and that President Trump had acted out of desperation. He added that future in‑person negotiations would occur, but would not signify acceptance of the enemy’s position.
Amid the postponement, the region remains volatile. The Israel Defense Forces reported targeting Hezbollah infrastructure amid Israeli strikes in Lebanon’s south, where at least 18 civilians were killed overnight. Lebanese media reported the talks were suspended due to ongoing Israeli air strikes, while Israel’s government insisted its war against Hezbollah is separate from its conflict with Iran.
The United States remains keen to resume the technical talks as soon as the logistics are resolved, stressing that the negotiations are crucial for the long‑term security framework in the Middle East.
