NEW YORK (AP) — In a significant return to late-night television, Jimmy Kimmel is set to resume his show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on Tuesday after nearly a weeklong suspension that ignited a nationwide discussion around freedom of speech and the conduct of media figures. His comments related to the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk led to backlash from various political and media factions.

Despite Kimmel’s return, certain ABC affiliates, specifically Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group, have publicly denounced the host, stating they will not air his show until there is a commitment to respectful dialogue. Collectively, these two organizations control around a quarter of ABC affiliates.

ABC had suspended Kimmel’s show after comments he made during a monologue drew criticism. ABC announced on Monday that the show would be back on air following 'thoughtful conversations' with Kimmel.

Colbert humorously commented on Kimmel's return, saying, 'Our long national late nightmare is over.' Kimmel had suggested many supporters of Trump were exploiting the death of Kirk, which further obscured the discussion around political narratives in the media.

Political and media figures alike have expressed varying responses to Kimmel's comments, particularly FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, who accused Kimmel of misleading the public. His remarks sparked a backlash, leading to a letter from hundreds of celebrities advocating for freedom of speech, addressed to ABC, decrying the suspension as a troubling signal for media integrity.

The situation has intensified with Kimmel facing additional scrutiny as Trump's administration historically has attempted to exert influence over media narratives, raising further questions about the future landscape of late-night television, where falling viewer numbers pose additional challenges for traditional broadcasts.

As Kimmel’s return approaches, many wonder how he will address the recent tensions on his first night, with millions expected to tune in to see his take on the controversial suspension that has stirred debates across political lines.
