The US and Iran have agreed to hold nuclear talks in Oman on Friday, as President Donald Trump issued a blunt warning to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the meeting would start at 10:00 (06:00 GMT) in Muscat. US officials also confirmed its location.
The discussions appeared at risk due to previous disagreements on the meeting's parameters, but reports suggest renewed commitment from both sides. Trump has bolstered US forces in the region and threatened military action if Iran fails to reach a deal regarding its nuclear program and the ongoing domestic unrest against its regime.
In response to inquiries about whether Khamenei should be worried, Trump stated, 'He should be very worried,' especially with negotiations now resuming.
Iran's Khamenei warned of dire consequences for the US in the event of an attack, indicating potential for a regional conflict. Meanwhile, diplomats noted fluctuating developments leading up to the talks following appeals from various leaders to ensure dialogue continued.
For future agreements to hold significance, officials indicated that discussions must encompass broader issues beyond just Iran's nuclear ambitions, including its ballistic missile program, regional military influence, and human rights concerns.
Both nations hope to navigate their differences in Muscat, where tensions continue to escalate amid ongoing protests in Iran regarding economic hardships and governance issues.
