DES MOINES, Iowa — Ian Roberts, the superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district, has resigned after immigration agents detained him following revelations that he falsely claimed to possess a doctoral degree when he applied for the role two years ago. Roberts falsely claimed in his application materials that he received a doctorate in urban educational leadership from Morgan State University in 2007; however, the institution confirmed that he had not completed that degree.
Despite the Des Moines school board being aware of his misrepresentation prior to his hiring, they still chose to appoint him to lead the district, which serves about 30,000 students. A background check performed at the time indicated that he had not completed his degree from Morgan State.
Roberts was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents based on a prior final order of removal and an unspecified past weapons charge. He is currently challenging the order to deport him to his native Guyana while remaining in detention.
In his application, Roberts also mentioned earning a doctorate from Trident University International, which has been confirmed by the district. Although he met some educational requirements to apply for the position, the false claim regarding his degree from Morgan State has raised questions about his integrity. Education administration experts stated that such discrepancies could undermine confidence in his character as a leader.
The legal and professional complexities surrounding Roberts’ case continue to unfold, as he now faces the dual burden of defending against deportation while addressing the implications of his educational qualifications.
