In a bold move, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has announced his intention to dedicate the majority of his $200 billion fortune to enhance health and education across Africa within the next 20 years. Speaking from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gates emphasized that empowering individuals through improved health and education can spur prosperity throughout the continent.

While setting his sights on future contributions, Gates also encouraged Africa’s youth to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to innovate and improve healthcare solutions. His recent commitment to donate 99% of his wealth by 2045 aligns with his foundation’s goal to conclude operations by that time.

At a gathering at the African Union headquarters, Gates remarked, "The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa," highlighting his foundation's focus on addressing pressing health issues. Former First Lady of Mozambique, Graça Machel, expressed her support, noting the vital role Gates could play during a challenging period for the continent.

The recent cutbacks in U.S. aid to Africa have raised concerns regarding healthcare accessibility, especially for HIV/Aids treatment. Gates emphasized the need for a robust primary healthcare system, focusing on maternal and child well-being, as essential for lasting health outcomes.

He pointed to the transformative impact of mobile technology on banking in Africa and called on innovators to reimagine healthcare systems by integrating AI. Gates cited Rwanda’s use of AI-enabled ultrasounds in prenatal care as an example of promising advancements.

According to the Gates Foundation, its strategy revolves around eliminating preventable maternal and infant deaths, combating infectious diseases, and alleviating poverty. This alignment underscores a commitment to creating sustainable improvements in healthcare and education on the continent.

As Gates pledges to disperse his wealth rapidly, he aims to leave a legacy that goes beyond mere financial wealth. While some critics argue that his philanthropic work provides a cover for tax evasion and excessive influence over global health policies, Gates remains determined to impact lives positively.

In his words, "People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that 'he died rich' will not be one of them." While a large portion of his wealth will be donated, it’s speculated that he will still retain billionaire status post-donations, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of prominent philanthropists like Warren Buffett.
