CHICAGO (AP) — Large swaths of the U.S. awaited one of the season’s first blasts of wintry weather Sunday as temperatures dipped and snow fell in the Northern Plains, while snowstorms developed eastward across the Great Lakes. The South is preparing for a significant chill.
Flurries fell Sunday morning across the Chicago area, a precursor to “intense” snowfall forecast to start in the evening in communities surrounding Lake Michigan, where the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning into Monday. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 30 miles per hour and snow accumulation could reach as much as 18 inches.
“This band is going to drop some very heavy snow and create hazardous travel scenarios for Monday morning commuters,” said meteorologist Kevin Doom in Romeoville, Illinois.
As temperatures continued to drop across the nation’s midsection, meteorologists warned of perilous travel conditions through winter weather advisories for Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan experienced snow Sunday morning with visibility warnings in place and up to a foot of snow forecast by Monday. Indiana is expected to see up to 11 inches of snow, creating “slippery surfaces” for road traffic. Wisconsin could see up to 6 inches.
Blowing snow and wind chills near zero are predicted in areas of Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Parts of Minnesota reported measurable snow earlier, with four inches recorded in the southwest and over five inches in northern Iowa.
Cold weather warnings have also been issued for Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, with freezing temperatures anticipated through Monday morning across a wide area of the South, extending from Texas and Oklahoma to Alabama and Georgia. Weather experts have advised gardeners to protect sensitive plants from the cold, indicating the growing season has effectively ended.
