FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man is currently facing trial for the aggravated murder of his wife and another man, both victims of a gruesome attack that prosecutors say was masterminded by him and a Brazilian au pair with whom he had an affair.
Brendan Banfield, who has pleaded not guilty, allegedly concocted a complex plan that culminated in the fatal stabbing of Christine Banfield in February 2023, along with the fatal assault on Joseph Ryan, who had been invited to the home under false pretenses. Prosecutors state that Banfield did not want to lose custody of his daughter, leading him to explore deadly options to remove his wife from the picture.
Court proceedings revealed that Banfield and Juliana Peres Magalhães reportedly engaged in elaborate deceptions, posing as Christine on a social media platform dedicated to sexual fetishes. For a month, they planned an encounter where Ryan would act out a fantasy scenario. The prosecution asserts that this plan ended in tragedy when Banfield and Magalhães entered the home after Ryan, leading to the double homicide.
Magalhães, who was also charged with murder, accepted a plea deal to manslaughter in 2024 after cooperating with investigators. Her cooperation significantly shapes the prosecution's case against Banfield, who now faces life imprisonment if convicted.
Banfield's attorney argued that the case against his client relies heavily on circumstantial evidence and questioned the narrative of a conspiracy, suggesting that Magalhães' change in testimony was influenced by her deal with authorities.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes at the Banfield household post-attack, with responders tending to both Christine and Ryan while Banfield displayed signs of distress. The trial continues to unfold with attention on the tragic circumstances surrounding these violent events.
