US President Donald Trump ruled out a joint venture with China on artificial intelligence during the launch of the America.gov portal. He said partnering would be equivalent to handing over secrets to the world’s rival.
Trump reiterated his stance in Washington, saying he would not impose restrictions that might stifle future growth despite mounting public concerns about AI safety. The remarks followed last week’s meeting between President Xi Jinping and White‑House officials, after which the two sides announced a new AI dialogue and a communication channel to avoid misunderstandings.
At the ceremony, Trump highlighted America’s leadership in AI and stressed that collaboration with competitors could give them an unfair advantage. He warned that any joint effort would let China access knowledge US researchers had not yet shared with the world, threatening to change the balance of power.
Despite calls for guardrails, Trump dismissed safety concerns as a hoax, comparing them to a global warming scam he claims is propagated by the radical left. Public polls, however, show a growing fear of AI’s potential risks, with two‑thirds of Americans believing there is at least a moderate danger of the technology destroying humanity.
