As sunset approached in the south-western Sydney suburb of Lakemba, the street outside the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque filled with thousands of people. The mosque hosted a community Iftar: the evening meal that marks the end of daily fasting in Ramadan. Dressed in traditional attire, families gathered to break their fast, sharing dates and food with neighbors under festive decorations.
However, a police surveillance trailer parked nearby underscored the community's ongoing fears in light of rising Islamophobia. Incidents targeting Muslims have surged since the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, with reports indicating an alarming increase of 636% in Islamophobic incidents.
Community leader Gamel Kheir expressed the need for solidarity during these challenging times. If ever there was a need for communities to come together and break bread, I would say this year is more important than ever, he stated.
Despite the festive atmosphere, Kheir noted the community's apprehension, saying that the current climate requires extra vigilance: We are going through very challenging times for the Muslim community and Australia in general. The enduring consequences of heightened tensions in Societal relations have left many feeling isolated and mistrustful.
The recent Bondi Beach shooting, which traumatized both the Jewish and Muslim communities, has further illustrated the urgent need for bridge-building efforts between diverse groups in Australia. Yet many Muslims feel as though their concerns are often overlooked by politicians, who may fear political backlash for speaking out against racism.
Despite the challenges, Lakemba remains a vibrant center for Muslim culture in Sydney, serving as a refuge for those seeking safety and community. Multiculturalism is a politician's word. It exists in our gatherings but often vanishes in broader society, critiques Dr. Zouhir Gabsi, reflecting prevalent sentiments within the community.
The will to celebrate and stand strong resonated on Eid, embodying resilience against a backdrop of fear and division.
