A 35‑year‑old woman was seriously injured after a shark attack at Coogee Beach, Sydney, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the east‑side beach Saturday morning. Witnesses helped pull the woman from the water and administered first aid before police arrived.

The victim suffered serious arm and leg injuries and was subsequently airlifted to a hospital by helicopter. Several nearby beaches were closed as a precautionary measure.

Eyewitness Nicola Logan told Reuters that she saw “a massive pool of blood” in the water, followed by a splashing scene and a ski‑paddler attempting to rescue the victim.

This incident follows other recent shark events in Australia, including the fatal bite of a male diver last week southeast of Perth and a fatal shark attack on a father of two in May.

Australia records almost 1,300 shark attacks since 1791, with over 260 resulting in death. Many popular swimming spots enforce shark‑defense measures.
