Israel's Defence Minister has stated that a buffer zone will be established within southern Lebanon, allowing Israel to maintain security control over a significant portion of the territory even after the war with Hezbollah ends.

Minister Katz indicated that the controlled area would extend up to the Litani River, approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. He further mentioned plans for demolition of houses in Lebanese villages adjacent to the border.

This declaration has been met with sharp criticism from Lebanon's Defence Minister, who characterized Katz's statements as a clear indication of a planned occupation of Lebanese land. European nations, Canada, and the UN have expressed similar concerns regarding this announcement.

Since the conflict escalated on March 2, where Israel launched ground operations following Hezbollah's retaliatory strikes, over 1,238 individuals, including children, have lost their lives in Lebanon. Additionally, Israel reported casualties from Hezbollah attacks on its territory.

Katz emphasized the intention to protect northern Israeli communities from militant attacks by affirming that all displaced residents in southern Lebanon would be forbidden from returning until safety is guaranteed in the north.

International backlash highlights fears of escalating military actions as already the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, marked by widespread displacement, suffers significantly from ongoing hostilities.
