In brief

As of November 2024, aid deliveries to Gaza have not met the demands set forth by the U.S., even after a letter was issued to Israel, urging them to rectify the situation within a 30-day timeframe. The Biden administration highlighted a drastic drop in aid shipments, revealing that figures for September were the lowest since Hamas initiated attacks on October 7, 2023.

In response to international pressure, particularly from the U.S. Defense Secretary and Secretary of State, Israel has allowed a slight influx of trucks carrying food and supplies into Gaza. However, the total aid has not only fallen short of pre-October levels, but also failed to satisfy the increased demands laid out by Washington. Recent adjustments to Israeli policy have not resulted in the expected uptick in humanitarian support. Vedant Patel, a spokesperson for the State Department, noted that while Israel has made some necessary changes, more progress is required. Notably, the Biden administration has decided not to impose cuts on military assistance to Israel despite the unmet deadlines, citing a lack of legal violations on Israel's part. Nonetheless, the decision to significantly curb commerce into Gaza to hinder Hamas's profits has greatly affected the availability of essential items such as food, medical supplies, and other lifesaving necessities. The humanitarian situation remains dire as Israel continues its operations against Hamas, pushing many residents into displacement amidst ongoing military activity in North Gaza. As hundreds of thousands face scarcity, international observers continue to express concerns for the welfare of civilians in the enclave.
