In brief
In Yakutia, Siberia, researchers unveil Yana, a 50,000-year-old baby mammoth, preserved in thawing permafrost, marking a significant archaeological find and shedding light on ancient ecosystems.
In a stunning archaeological breakthrough, Russian scientists have announced the discovery of the remains of a 50,000-year-old baby mammoth, unearthed from thawing permafrost in the remote Yakutia region this summer. Dubbed "Yana" after the river basin where she was found, the remains are considered the world’s best-preserved mammoth carcass yet reported.Yana, who weighed more than 100 kilograms (approximately 15 stone 10 pounds), stood at 120 centimeters (around 4 feet) tall and measured 200 centimeters in length. Estimates suggest she was just one year old at the time of her demise. Prior to this discovery, only six similar mammoth finds had been recorded globally—five in Russia and one in Canada.Situated in the Batagaika crater, known to be the largest permafrost crater on Earth, Yana's remains were discovered by local residents who fortuitously stumbled upon her while she was nearly fully thawed. According to Maxim Cherpasov, the head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory, these individuals constructed a makeshift stretcher to retrieve the mammoth from the ground after noticing her condition. While some parts of Yana's body had succumbed to animal scavengers, her head is remarkably intact. Researcher Gavril Novgorodov speculated that the young mammoth may have become caught in a swamp, which contributed to her exceptional preservation over thousands of years. Currently, scientists at the North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk are performing tests to ascertain Yana’s age and the exact circumstances surrounding her death. This discovery is part of a larger trend of prehistoric finds in Russia's permafrost as climate change continues to thaw this ancient ground. Just last month, researchers showcased a 32,000-year-old partial mummified body of a sabre-tooth cat, and earlier this year, the remains of a 44,000-year-old wolf came to light.
