Tanzania's Independent National Elections Commission (INEC) has officially barred the opposition party Chadema from contesting in the forthcoming elections, following a recent escalation in tensions regarding electoral reforms. According to Ramadhani Kailima, director of elections at INEC, the party's disqualification is the result of failure to adhere to the deadline for signing a required code of conduct.

This development comes shortly after Tundu Lissu, Chadema's leader and a former presidential candidate, faced treason charges connected to remarks made during a rally where he advocated for essential electoral reforms. His voice was critical in the electoral landscape as he posed a potential challenge to incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Lissu's arrest last week, wherein he faced serious accusations of inciting rebellion, has drawn substantial criticism and accusations of political repression from various human rights advocates and opposition factions, claiming that the ruling CCM party is intensifying its clampdown on dissent. The government, however, has denied such allegations and is currently investigating claims of abductions involving opposition members.

Chadema's refusal to partake in the code signing ceremony underlines its dissent against what it perceives as deeply flawed electoral processes. Lissu has staunchly argued that free and fair elections in Tanzania are unattainable under the current regime without comprehensive reforms.

Political analysts view this situation as a significant boost for the CCM party, which has maintained control since 1977, with hopes of continuing its dominance amid an increasingly constrained political landscape. Meanwhile, Lissu's own tumultuous history, including an assassination attempt in 2017 and multiple arrests, reflects the perilous position of political opposition in Tanzania today.

The treason case against Lissu has been postponed until April 24, raising questions about the future of political opposition in the country as the election date approaches.
