Donald Trump is the only one who can force Russian leader Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table over the war in Ukraine, Finland's president has told the BBC.
Alexander Stubb also stated that Finland would never recognize occupied Crimea as part of Russia, and he hoped Ukraine would become a member of both the EU and NATO post-conflict.
In a recent interview aired on BBC Radio 4, Stubb discussed the geopolitical landscape ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's meeting with Trump at the White House, where he urged the US leader for assistance in resolving the conflict. Stubb declared, I think we can end this war with your help.
Trump confirmed that Putin is willing to meet him in Hungary, indicating a potential pathway for dialogue. He expressed belief that both Zelensky and Putin wish to end the conflict and urged for decisive action to bring about a resolution.
During the discussion, Stubb criticized the previous approaches taken with Putin, advocating for a firmer stance. He remarked on the ineffective tactics used previously and called for more pressure on Russia to force them to come to the negotiating table for peace. What we need is not so much the power of the carrot to convince Russia to the negotiating table, it's more of the stick that will bring them, he stated.
Stubb reflected on Trump's past inquiries about trusting Putin, answering negatively and stressing that economic sanctions and strategic pressure were essential in pushing Russia towards peace negotiations. He described the current situation, where Russia's economy is faltering, and inflation rates have surged due to the conflict.
Additionally, Stubb reinforced Finland's stance regarding Crimea and urged that Ukraine should retain its sovereignty and territorial integrity post-conflict. He concluded with optimism about a two-phase peace process, aiming first for a ceasefire and then for an extended negotiation phase within the coming weeks.
As tensions continue, the role of major players like Trump and Stubb will be pivotal in navigating a path towards peace in Ukraine.
