Dan Bongino has announced that he will be leaving his role as the FBI's deputy director in January.

In a post on X, he thanked President Donald Trump, as well as the director of the FBI and the attorney general for the opportunity to serve with purpose.

This announcement follows earlier remarks from Trump, who indicated that Bongino did a great job in his office and expressed a desire to return to his podcast.

Bongino was appointed to the role by Trump in February, having previous experience as a New York City police officer and a U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to protect former President Barack Obama. His media career has also seen him build a large following through his podcast.

Notably, Bongino, a staunch Trump ally, was a surprising choice for the deputy director position, which had been previously held by career agents, due to his lack of prior experience in the agency. This decision was opposed by the FBI Agents Association, representing around 14,000 current and former agents.

In his resignation announcement, he stated, I want to thank President Trump, AG [Pam] Bondi, and Director [Kash] Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose. Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you. God bless America, and all those who defend Her.

Prior to his appointment, Bongino had been quoted spreading false information and conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 presidential election, including claims surrounding the January 6 insurrection and questioning the circumstances surrounding the death of Jeffrey Epstein in a New York prison in 2019.
