A wildfire in western Crete has forced the evacuation of around 8,000 residents and tourists from the city of Rethymno. Gusts have hit 125 km/h, turning the blaze into a fast‑moving fire that has spread over 15 km of open land and destroyed dozens of homes.
The evacuations began after two firefighters were trapped and died near Krya Vrysi, and a third died near the Peloponnese port town of Gytheio. Local officials say the smoke is thick and the wind is still violent, rendering firefighting aircraft unable to fly until conditions improve.
Greek authorities have deployed about 224 firefighters, 53 engines, 11 specialised units and two aircraft to fight the flames, but the wind continues to fan the fire to the east and west. Tourist resorts and villages will remain on high alert until the fire is contained.
Wildfires across Europe are increasing in size and intensity under the 2026 heatwave, with Spain already seeing fires that have burnt over 43,000 hectares, the biggest in its history. In France, a blaze in Gironde has not spread for three days amid lower temperatures and a mild rain forecast.
The region’s fire service chief, Theodoros Vagias, issued a note of condolence to the fallen firefighters Emmanouil Stratidakis (58) and Pantelis Diamantakis (25). They were buried on Thursday, according to official statements.
Greek officials warn that fire‑prone conditions are expected to spread towards the centre of Europe this week, placing Greece, Turkey and surrounding countries at heightened risk. Citizens are urged to stay updated through local emergency services and the European fire monitoring network.
