Porter Airlines aircraft

The cancellation of a Porter Airlines flight on 6 August caused a stir after a young passenger refused to buckle his seat belt. The cabin crew reported that the child was standing in his seat and would not secure the belt, and the flight was forced to return to the terminal.

Because the departure would not be possible before the runway closed at midnight, passengers were rebooked onto the following day’s flight.

Porter Airlines stated that “attempts by the accompanying parent and crew to address this were unsuccessful” and that “the aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition.”

A child aviation safety expert, Lia Tuso, told reporters that the crew’s decision protected both the passenger and the entire cabin: “Unrestrained children can become projectiles,” she said, citing turbulence risks on take‑off and landing.

The incident has reignited an online debate about how airlines should handle families, and how parents should enforce seat‑belt rules. Some commentators praised a firm stance on discipline, while others argued the child may have been anxious about flying.

At a 2018 Southwest Airlines incident, a father and daughter were ejected from a flight for a tantrum that subsided after boarding. The family later criticised the airline’s lack of “humanity.”

JetBlue has also removed customers that failed to comply with crew instructions, citing safety concerns. The current event continues to trigger discussions on the balance between passenger safety and family‑friendly practices in the skies.
