11 Killed in KwaMakhutha Mass Shooting

Gunmen stormed a house in the KwaMakhutha township, an area near Durban, late on Tuesday, leaving 11 people dead in a single strike.

Police say the attackers entered a home where a party of 14 people, including one pregnant woman, were gathering. They opened fire, killing 10 at the scene and taking four to hospital; a fifth later died from injuries.

Authorities hinted that some of the victims were flagged for alleged criminal activity, but details remain sealed to protect ongoing investigations. While motive remains unclear, police are exploring the possibility of clashes between rival gangs.

In a statement, police described the incident: “13 men and one woman, believed to be pregnant, were holding a party inside the house when three men burst in and fired at them.” The woman is among the fallen.

Local TV footage captured gunmen setting a victim’s vehicle on fire before fleeing. The police are on the lookout for the suspects, who reportedly carried pistols and rifles.

South Africa, one of the highest murder rate nations, recently reported a surge in violent crime, including numerous high‑profile shootings in cities like Johannesburg and a series of brutal murders of women along highways.

The country’s crime problem is multi‑faceted: high proliferation of illegal firearms, elongated justice delays, and growing concerns over ties between law enforcement personnel and criminal networks. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called organised crime “the most immediate threat” and announced a military deployment to aid police.

While the massacre has ignited fear across the community, the situation underscores the urgent need for targeted policing, anti‑gang strategies, and socioeconomic reforms that reduce the incentives for crime.
