Authorities are probing a disturbing case of suspected poisoning after three women tragically died following the consumption of a Christmas cake at a family gathering in Torres, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The local police disclosed that arsenic, a highly toxic substance, has been detected in the blood of one deceased woman, along with a 10-year-old boy and the female baker, all of whom are currently hospitalized.
On Monday afternoon, six out of seven attendees at the Christmas celebration are reported to have eaten the cake, where complaints arose regarding an unusual "peppery" taste. Shortly after, several family members began exhibiting alarming symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Five of them sought medical treatment at the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Hospital around 01:00 AM local time. Tragically, two sisters, identified as 58-year-old Maida Berenice Flores da Silva and 43-year-old Tatiana Denize Silva dos Santos, succumbed to cardiac arrest shortly thereafter. The third victim, who was identified as 65-year-old Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, died later that same day due to "shock after food poisoning."
Authorities have dispatched the leftover cake for further testing, while also uncovering expired food items from the baker's home during a search. Meanwhile, the police have requested the exhumation of the deceased husband of the cake maker, who passed away earlier this year under circumstances initially deemed natural. It remains to be confirmed whether the suspected poisoning was intentional, with investigations ongoing.
As the police await test results from the cake, the community is left in shock, grappling with the aftermath of an event that was meant to celebrate the festive season. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that poses significant health risks, classified as a known carcinogen by the EU and associated with severe toxicological effects when ingested in significant quantities.
