The scandal unfolded when a report surfaced indicating that officials at Peixin had utilized inedible paint to enhance the color of meals served to children, leading to significant lead contamination—over 2,000 times the national safety limit. Initially, eight individuals were detained, including the principal and several kitchen staff, with six now facing arrest. The investigation led to a total of 27 people, including several officials, either under formal proceedings or disciplinary review.

On July 8, the Gansu authorities reported that 235 children were hospitalized with lead poisoning after consuming contaminated food items, notably steamed red date cakes and corn buns. Currently, 234 of those children have been discharged.

Despite initial delays in testing by the Gansu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which allegedly compromised test results, the central government has reacted swiftly by assessing lapses in procedure and announcing new national meal provision guidelines for schools. These guidelines mandate rigorous testing and procurement measures for food supplies.

In addition, efforts are being made to provide free medical treatment to affected children, and legal support for their families has been promised. The temporary management of Peixin Kindergarten has been transferred to a state-operated entity as the fallout from this incident continues to resonate across China.
