The US government will impose a substantial pickup in sanctions against Russia as the fighting in Ukraine continues, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Bessent's comments came just before NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was due at the White House, where he expressed hopes to discuss how to deliver Trump's vision of peace in the conflict.
Earlier in the day, Rutte stated that he believes Trump is the only one who can get this done.
Tragically, at least seven people have been reported killed, including children, during intense Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine—just hours after Trump announced that plans for a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest had been shelved.
Bessent did not provide specific details regarding the incoming sanctions but indicated they would be announced either after the close this afternoon or first thing tomorrow morning. US lawmakers have been awaiting a directive from the White House to vote on a bill enforcing steep sanctions against Russia, targeting also countries that purchase oil from the Kremlin.
During the anticipated meeting at the White House, Rutte is expected to discuss a 12-point plan created by European NATO allies and Kyiv, focusing on freezing current frontlines, returning deported children, and facilitating a prisoner exchange. The comprehensive plan also includes a war recovery fund for Ukraine, security pathways, a clear route for Ukraine's EU membership, and increased military aid along with economic pressure on Moscow.
In previous statements, Trump has indicated he would prefer a cut of the battle lines and a cessation of hostilities, asserting that any solution should allow for peace along the existing frontlines. However, Russian officials have outrightly rejected the proposition, insisting on their terms for any negotiations.
