US Marine Arrested Over Murder of Hotel Guest in Okinawa

A 20‑year‑old US Marine was detained on suspicion of murder after a 39‑year‑old Japanese woman was found dead in a hotel in Naha City, Okinawa.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the crime as a "brutal and heinous" robbery and murder, calling on the United States to enforce stricter discipline of its personnel.

Japan’s NHK identified the victim as Yagi Anna and the suspect as Devin Jacob Ballard, who is stationed at the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

'We are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities in response to allegations of serious criminal actions by a Marine,' the Marine Corps said on social media, extending condolences to the victim’s family.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi tweeted, "Such an incident is utterly inexcusable and fills me with strong indignation," adding that incidents involving U.S. military personnel "cause significant anxiety to the local community and must never occur."

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it was fully cooperating with the Japanese government and local police, while Japan’s foreign ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass for discussion on Sunday.

Okinawa, home to several U.S. military bases and tens of thousands of American troops, has repeatedly urged the United States to take stronger action to prevent such incidents. Governor Genta Koja said the recurring nature of the event indicates a failure of the U.S. military’s discipline and education programs.
