A New York Times executive was fatally shot in California, allegedly by his wife’s elderly parents.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the newspaper’s director of engineering for the games player experience, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin – 35 miles (56 km) west of San Francisco – on Saturday afternoon, police said.
Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, face charges including first‑degree murder. They are due to appear in court on Wednesday and remain at the Santa Rita jail.
McKinsey’s death was confirmed by the newspaper shortly after the incident.
His body was located at 15:00 local time on Thursday outside the Dublin Sports Grounds. Police said witnesses heard a flurry of gunshots before seeing the victim on the ground.
“I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody,” a witness named Assad Razawi told KGO‑TV.
Another observer noted that the victim had seen the couple walk together and then disappear after the shooting.
The elderly couple were arrested several minutes later by an officer passing by; they had stayed in the area after the attack, a witness said.
Police have not released any motive. In addition to murder, the parents‑in‑law face felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment charges.
