Unexpected Clue
Police in eastern France have discovered a Luger P06 pistol submerged in Lake Annecy, a short distance from the Swiss border. The weapon has strong ties to the 2012 murders of British tourist Saad al‑Hilli, his wife and mother‑in‑law, who were shot through the head in a forest road, and a passing cyclist who was also killed.
The pistol was found by British tourists on 20 August, who initially mistook it for a water pistol. They realised it was a real handgun once they felt its weight. The gun, now a critical evidence piece, has been sent to forensic labs for detailed analysis to confirm whether it matches the Luger model that left the victims fatal injuries.
The case remains one of the most perplexing cold investigations in the Alps. A 2012 report highlighted that the Luger P06 was common among Swiss ex‑soldiers, suggesting it could have come from a regional source or private collection. The discovery has offered investigators a new lead, potentially identifying the shooter or the motive behind the murders.
Key witnesses, including the two surviving al‑Hilli children and local residents, have been called back for additional statements. The investigation continues as detectives examine the pistol and any possible forensic evidence it may carry.
