A fatal stabbing in Times Square late Wednesday brought a 32‑year‑old woman to her death and left a second victim in a hospital floundering for stability.
The suspect, a 49‑year‑old woman wielding two knives, was shot by police after the officer’s attempts to force her to drop her weapons failed.
All three individuals were taken to hospital: both the female victim and the suspect were pronounced dead, while a 68‑year‑old man survived, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani in a news conference.
The NYPD described the attack as an unprovoked double stabbing that snapped inside a half‑minute span.
At 4:24 p.m. local time, the office centre received multiple 911 calls reporting a woman with two knives attacking people on Seventh Avenue in Times Square; the incident began near West 41st Street.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a witness saw the suspect pull knives out of a red Target bag before striking a man who had just left the subway with his wife—a random, unprovoked move.
Police then chased and engaged the suspect, who refused to drop her weapons and shouted threats; after four minutes of negotiation, officers used Tasers—less effective and did not halt her approach—before ultimately shooting her.
She was later identified as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, who, despite never having been arrested, had a documented mental‑health history with the NYPD in 2018 and 2019.
A Boston‑tourist, Melinda Puzon, reported hearing gunfire and seeing crowds on the street, stating, “It’s very shocking.”
