Istanbul court convicts popular comedian of insulting President Erdoğan and delivers a 19‑month sentence, but releases him after time served.
The judge also imposed a travel ban, preventing Göktaş from leaving Turkey.
A final decision will be made by the appellate court.
Deniz Göktaş, who denied the charges, had already spent nearly 90 days in custody. Prosecutors sought up to 12 years.
His viral YouTube routine had attracted more than 15 million views. Prosecutors highlighted a line where he called the Turkish leader “a shy dictator.” Göktaş argued it was a political characterization, not an insult.
He was arrested and handcuffed at Istanbul airport in July after returning from vacation.
During his court appearance, Göktaş maintained his sense of humor, joking that he had quit smoking and would add three months to his life. The comment drew laughter and applause.
Outside, fellow comedian Firat Aksal welcomed the verdict, saying the crowd was delighted but had not expected a fair trial.
A group of supporters gathered near the courthouse with signs that translated to "Deniz Göktaş not alone." Afterward, competitors expect the comedian to rest briefly, visit family, then return to the stage.
Many others, including journalists, human rights activists, student protesters, LGBTQ advocates and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, remain in prison as the country’s jails hit capacity.
