Police in the state of Mississippi have arrested a suspect in the case of a black woman who was found dead hanging from a tree. The woman, Tasia Fortune, 29, was discovered in the lot of an abandoned house in Jackson last August.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the arrest marks an important step but that the investigation remains active. The medical examiner confirmed the death was a homicide, and the suspect faces a murder charge.
The arrest follows weeks in which the family and residents expressed frustration over a lack of information. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said she had been left waiting after several voicemails and a letter that was eventually read at a city meeting.
Police have interviewed fifteen people in the case and secured the first suspect, with officials saying additional detentions could follow as evidence continues to emerge.
The case was highlighted by a letter signed by more than 50 members of Congress, calling for a federal investigation into what they described as a possible modern-day lynching. They noted at least ten similar incidents in 2026 alone and referenced over 70 documented lynchings between 2000 and 2025.
