A woman was killed when a ski gondola crashed down a snowy mountain at Engelberg ski resort in the Swiss Alps, local officials say. Police in the central Swiss canton of Nidwalden reported the gondola detached from the cable for reasons that are still unclear at about 11:00 (10:00 GMT) on Wednesday. Eyewitnesses noted extremely strong winds buffeting the mountainside during the incident. Dramatic footage of the gondola tumbling down Mt Titlis has circulated, showing it flipping over several times before coming to a halt. Authorities later identified the victim as a 61-year-old woman from the region, and investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. The gondola had just departed from Trübsee station and was ascending when the detachment occurred. Emergency services, including air rescues, responded to the crash site, aiding the woman who was alone in the gondola. Additionally, Swiss police indicated gusts exceeding 80km/h (50mph) were recorded at the time. The gondola service has since been suspended, affecting approximately 100 to 200 passengers, who were safely transported from about 40 gondolas. The ski lift managers expressed their condolences to the victim's family.
