In a groundbreaking study, health experts have unveiled a staggering statistic—over three million children died globally in 2022 due to infections resistant to antibiotics. The research, spearheaded by Doctor Yanhong Jessika Hu from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Australia and Professor Herb Harwell of the Clinton Health Access Initiative, places particular emphasis on the heightened risks faced by children in Africa and South East Asia. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognized as a critical public health issue, representing a significant and growing threat worldwide.

The study draws on data from reliable sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, confirming that the toll of AMR on child health is far-reaching and devastating. Alarmingly, experts indicate that there has been over a tenfold increase in AMR-related infections among children in the past three years. The repercussions of the Covid pandemic have likely exacerbated this situation, leading to increased antibiotic use in various contexts.

Antibiotics are commonly employed to combat a range of bacterial infections, from skin ailments to pneumonia. However, they are ineffective against viral infections like the common cold and Covid-19. The ongoing overuse and misuse of antibiotics have spurred some bacteria to develop resistance, while the pace of new antibiotic production has slowed considerably, raising concerns over the availability of effective treatment options.

The report outlines a troubling surge in the utilization of "watch antibiotics"—medications meant for severe infections—with their use rising by 160% in South East Asia and 126% in Africa between 2019 and 2021. Meanwhile, the reliance on "reserve antibiotics," designed for the most serious multidrug-resistant infections, grew by 45% and 125% in these regions, respectively.

With a growing number of bacteria evolving resistance to existing antibiotics, health experts are sounding the alarm. Prof Harwell, who is set to present these findings at the upcoming Congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Vienna, underscores that AMR is a predicament that affects everyone, but disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations such as children.

Addressing AMR is undoubtedly complex. "It's a multi-faceted problem that permeates all spheres of medicine and human life," warns Prof Harwell. The WHO identifies AMR as one of the most daunting global health challenges; thus, experts advocate for elevated immunization standards, improved sanitation, and hygiene measures as crucial preventative steps.

Dr. Lindsey Edwards from King's College London echoed these sentiments, describing the new findings as a significant and alarming escalation in child deaths linked to AMR. She calls for immediate and decisive actions from global leaders, emphasizing that without proactive measures, AMR could reverse progress made in child health, particularly in the most affected regions.
