Sanchez Calls Snap Election Amid Housing Crisis Turmoil

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a snap general election for 29 November after his housing relief package was narrowly defeated in Parliament.

The package, designed to lower rents, protect tenants from eviction and curb investor speculation, was blocked by parties on the right who voted against it.

Sanchez’s decision follows mounting corruption probes within the Socialist Party and allegations of misuse of funds against his wife, as well as a crisis in Ceuta where more than 70,000 migrants arrived in July.

By centering the campaign on housing, Sanchez hopes to redirect public focus away from these controversies and mobilise left‑leaning voters for a larger majority.

Political analysts warn that the election will test Sanchez’s capacity to restore a working majority and keep his government afloat in a turbulent environment.
