A police operation in Rio de Janeiro led to a chaotic situation where around 200 tourists were stranded during a gunfight between law enforcement and gang members in the Vidigal favela. Despite the alarming circumstances, the situation was ultimately controlled, and tourists were able to safely descend after approximately 30 minutes.
The confrontation ensued as police sought to apprehend members of the notorious Comando Vermelho gang believed to be hiding in the area. With the main access route blocked due to the ongoing exchanges of gunfire, tourists atop Morro Dois Irmãos were left in a precarious situation.
Videos circulated on social media depict frightened visitors seated on the ground, with a police helicopter overhead as the sounds of gunfire resonated nearby. Matilda Oliveiro, a tourist, described how she and her sister were instructed to sit down moments before hearing gunfire, noting that while the experience was frightening, it was handled as well as possible by the guides.
Local guides indicated they had received prior notification of the police action and had coordinated with the authorities to ensure the safety of the tourists. As the police operation unfolded, tourists were reassured and given instructions for a safe return.
Many tourists participating in the incident expressed their relief after successfully descending and even managed to enjoy the sunrise after the turmoil. The incident, while harrowing, was managed effectively by both tourists and guides who reported feeling safe under the circumstances.
Comando Vermelho maintains control over various aspects of life in the favelas, extending beyond drug trafficking to the provision of essential services like electricity and transportation, creating a challenging environment for law enforcement in the region.
