NATO has announced there is no provision for expelling or suspending member states from the military alliance, following reports that the US may consider such measures against Spain due to its stance on the Iran war.
Reports from Reuters indicated that an internal email from the Pentagon suggested potential punitive actions for allies perceived as not sufficiently supporting US military campaigns.
A NATO official confirmed to the BBC that the alliance's founding treaty does not include provisions for member suspension or expulsion, emphasizing the need for unity among allies.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rejected claims of a possible suspension, stating, We do not work based on emails but through official positions of the US government. He reaffirmed Spain's commitment to cooperate with its allies within the framework of international law.
Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson noted the US's frustrations over allies' lack of support, mentioning, The War Department will ensure that the president has credible options to ensure that our allies are no longer a paper tiger and instead do their part. She stressed there would be no further comments on internal deliberations involving international relations.
The diplomatic tensions arise after the US and Israel conducted attacks on Iran, leading to further restrictions on shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz. Spain opted not to permit the use of its military bases for operations against Iran, further aggravating the situation.
While some NATO leaders, such as Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, called for solidarity among member states, the UK and Germany have asserted Spain's membership is unaffected by these developments.
Sánchez's comments, alongside similar sentiments from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, highlight a shared reluctance among European leaders to deepen military involvement in the conflict, while emphasizing the importance of adhering to international law.
The situation remains fluid as international dialogue continues regarding the ongoing tensions involving the US and its NATO allies.
