Kit Harington is cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO Max’s new Harry Potter series
English actor Kit Harington, widely recognised for his eight‑season role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, is set to step into the shoes of the flamboyant Gilderoy Lockhart for HBO’s new television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter saga.
The move replaces Nicholas Hoult, who bowed out of the second season due to a scheduling conflict. Harington joined the project after a brief stint voicing Lockhart in the Audible full‑cast audio edition of Harry Potter that year.
The show will film its debut with the premiere of the first film this Christmas on HBO Max, then continue with the second book, The Chamber of Secrets, layering the familiar Hogwarts setting with fresh talent. Dominic McLaughlin will embody the young wizard Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will become Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger.
Executive producers include director‑producer Mark Mylod, who formerly helmed Game of Thrones, and author J.K. Rowling herself. Veteran actor John Lithgow will take on the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore, while Nick Frost joins the cast as Rubeus Hagrid.
With an ambitious plan to cover all seven books over a decade‑long production, the series promises to deliver a new spin on the beloved wizarding world for a new generation of fans.
