An Indian pilot on a Flydubai flight to Israel is being hailed as a hero after he stopped a violent attack by his co‑pilot as the aircraft took off from Dubai on Sunday. The attacker, an officer of the airline, pounded the cockpit, threatening the crew and passengers. The captain, who remained calm under pressure, opened the door, letting the rest of the cabin into the cockpit to overpower the assailant.
The entire flight of 248 people survived, and the jet diverted to Saudi Arabia where it landed safely. The pilot, who was injured and is in a hospital, later received a phone call from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him not to be ashamed and thanking him for his bravery.
According to the airline, the co‑pilot was arrested shortly after the incident. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
The event has sparked discussions in aviation safety circles about cockpit security and the training of flight crew to handle on‑board aggression. Passengers who were on board have expressed deep gratitude and support for the captain’s quick thinking and leadership.
