In brief

An unprecedented heatwave has hit the US East Coast and Midwest, bringing temperatures above 100°F and creating dangerously high heat‑index values. Washington’s Freedom 250 State Fair had to close for a few hours, and officials treated several heat‑related cases before reopening. Philadelphia cancelled its Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade, a staple of the holiday weekend, due to safety concerns. Other cities, from New Jersey to Colorado, call off parades and outdoor festivities, while Trump’s July 4th celebration on the National Mall faces potential disruption. Meteorologists warn the heat will linger into the weekend before being interrupted by storms and hail, highlighting the growing threat of climate‑driven extreme weather in the US.

Ultra‑warm temperatures above 100°F have shut down key holiday events across the United States, creating unprecedented heat‑index numbers in the East and Midwest.

Washington’s Freedom 250 State Fair, a highlight of the July 4th weekend, had to close for several hours on Friday after several people required emergency treatment for heat‑related illnesses. The event resumed later in the day once conditions improved.

Philadelphia’s Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade – one of the country’s biggest road‑marches – has been cancelled outright. Organiser Wawa Welcome America CEO Michael DelBene stated the decision was “driven by safety concerns under these wild heat conditions.”

Other parades, fireworks shows, and street festivals from New Jersey and Pennsylvania to Colorado were also put on hold. In Washington DC, the President’s outdoor speech on the National Mall is set to proceed but at a reduced crowd size, with security scrapping the usual entry for the evening A Capitol Fourth concert.

Meteorologists warn that the heat will persist through the weekend, with the hottest readings expected in Virginia, the Carolinas and the Southeast, before a cooler storm front arrives with hail, high winds and flash flooding.
