Eurovision Song Contest Unveils Groundbreaking Asia Edition
Known for its glitzy stage costumes and vibrant performances, the Eurovision Song Contest has launched its first-ever Asia edition.
Broadcasters from ten countries, including South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines, have confirmed their participation. According to the contest's website, they will first host their national selections before the grand final in Bangkok on November 14, 2026.
Since its inception in 1956, Eurovision has become the world's longest-running international music competition. With next year marking its 70th anniversary, director Martin Green described this Asian expansion as especially meaningful, reflecting the region's rich cultural creativity.
The announcement has generated excitement on social media, with many fans eagerly rooting for their home countries. Comments such as Philippines will win every year highlight the region's passion for music.
'A Celebration of Original Pop Music'
This isn't Eurovision's first attempt to expand beyond Europe; the 2022 American Song Contest featured representatives from all 50 states but failed to be renewed for a second year. This time, Asian fans hope for a more successful installment, driven by the region's growing music industry, fueled by rising incomes and the popularity of K-pop.
As of now, the participating countries include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. Participants will showcase original songs, sung live, as audiences cast their votes, reinforcing the contest's commitment to originality.
With Asia's rich musical scene, including influences from Bollywood and K-pop, the region holds immense potential for this new competition. The Asia edition is collaboratively organized by the European Broadcasting Union, Voxovation, and Thailand's S2O Productions.
The inaugural Asia edition of the contest promises to be a celebration of original pop music, inviting audiences from across the continent to witness a vibrant showcase of talent.
