Associated Press (AP) — Storming an apartment complex by helicopter as families slept. Deploying chemical agents near a public school. Handcuffing a Chicago City Council member at a hospital.
Activists, residents, and leaders say increasingly combative tactics used by federal immigration agents are sparking violence and fueling neighborhood tensions in Chicago. Over 1,000 immigrants have been arrested since an immigration crackdown began last month, with local officials expressing outrage at the tactics employed by agents.
“They are the ones that are making it a war zone,” said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. He highlighted the use of tear gas and smoke grenades by federal agents, making neighborhoods feel like war zones.
Incidents of Force
One significant operation involved federal agents using helicopters and unmarked vehicles to arrest 37 immigrants in the South Shore neighborhood, a primarily Black area. This operation, which included agents rappelling from helicopters, has led to fears among residents, particularly as U.S. citizens were also detained during these aggressive encounters.
“This is not normal. It’s not OK. It’s not right,” stated Dixon Romero of Southside Together, reflecting the sentiments shared by many fearful residents.
Furthermore, the recent use of chemical agents by immigration officials, which has increased in visibility, raises alarms about safety in communities, particularly with reports of canisters being used near schools.
Political Response
In response to the outcry, Pritzker has directed state agencies to investigate claims regarding the treatment of children during these raids, condemning military-style tactics against families.
Local leaders in Broadview, a suburb hosting an immigration processing center, are escalating their fight against federal agents to court. They seek to challenge aggressive policing and have filed a lawsuit against the government over the installation of a fence they claim poses public safety concerns.
The situation continues to evolve, with community protests growing and civil rights organizations demanding accountability from federal agents. Activists emphasize the need for humane treatment and increased oversight over immigrant enforcement practices, advocating for the rights of all residents in the city.
